Hilfield Friary Franciscan Festival: Celebrating the Stigmata of St Francis

Saturday 16 September 2017 12 noonSung Eucharist (president: Brother Sam). Please bring a picnic lunchfor afterwards, and the Friary will provide tea and coffee. 

2pm: In the courtyard, a talk by Brother Sam on the Friary's past and future. Sam will move to the Franciscan house in Plaistow, East London, at the start of October. To hear Brother Sam talking on Radio 4 about monastic life, click here

Bellini's St Francis: A New Understanding.An illustrated talk by Graham Welstead, former Director of Art at Bancroft's School, Essex, about this medieval masterpiece. Free entry, with wine.Thursday 28 September, 7.30pm, Yetminster Church. 

Kerri Canepa of the Hilfield Community, who recently completed lay ministry training, invites everyone to her commissioning/licensing service on Saturday 30 September at Salisbury Cathedral during Choral Evensong, beginning at 5:30 pm. She would appreciate very much your prayers. Please come: all are welcome! 

Holnest Church, Coffee & Cake: Sat 30 Sept and Sun 1 Oct, 10am – midday. Come and enjoy refreshments in the church which will be decorated for the Harvest Festival, at 6.30pm on Sun 1 Oct.

The Courtesan’s Gaze: A concert of music by Barbara Strozzi (1619 – 1677) and her circle:
Sunday 8 October, 7.30pm, St Andrew’s Church Yetminster.
This concert sees the return to Yetminster of two of the Radio 3 veterans, the Fieri Consort (fiericonsort.co.uk), following on from their stunning concert there in March, and their subsequent tour to Australia. Barbara Strozzi lived a life of high musical achievement and scandal in the Venice of the seventeenth century. A prolific composer, she was also said to have acted as courtesan at musical meetings where “clothes were optional”. This concert of duets composed by Strozzi and her contemporaries, Montiverdi and Cavalli, will explore her reception and notoriety.Tickets: £14 each, from John Summers: This email address is being protected from spambots. St Peter's Church, Chetnole: Choral Evensong sung by the Barn Choir. Sunday 3 September, 6.30pm. The Dorset based Barn Choir will sing a beautiful Tudor setting of Choral Evensong. Come along and enjoy the pinnacle of English liturgy set to some of the country's finest musical heritage. A treat for worshipers and lovers of music alike. There will be a glass of wine afterwards.

Tuesday 5th September, 7pm, Leigh Village Hall: Wriggle Valley Mothers’ Union present a talk: “A Journey in India with the Leprosy Mission”. Jennie Marfleet went to India to visit a Leprosy Mission Hospital last November and a centre for training staff where the effects of treatment are studied. Her talk will give an insight into how rife the problem remains and the inspiring care and dedication shown to patients. 

 

Dorset Historic Churches Trust Ride and Stride: Saturday 9 September. Please support your local organiser as they raise funds by riding, walking or cycling around local churches. More details from church wardens.

SHerborne Area REfugee Support(SHARES) are very happy to say that we will be welcoming a Syrian family (parents and 2 young children) to Sherborne in September! We have had a lot of donated furniture/household items but there are still a few things needed. If anyone would like to help fill the gaps, please contact Catherine Adam on 01935 432945.We continue to collect food, clothes, blankets etc at Cheap Street church on Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday mornings 10.30-12.00, which are taken to Taunton Aid For Refugees who then send on to camps in Syria, Lebanon, Greece etc. More donations always needed especially non perishable food items.

Yetminster Compline: Every Monday at 6pm. From 31st July onwards Compline will be said in Yetminster Church.

Coffee Morning at Chetnole Village Hall  Every Wednesday in aid of charity. 10am until midday.

Leigh Food Festival & Classic and Vintage Car/Bike Show: Saturday 29 July at the Village Hall, 10am – 4pm. Entry £2, under 15s free. A food festival featuring a wealth of local producers selling everything from pies and sushi to tea and fudge. The day also includes a display of classic / vintage cars and motorbikes, children's activities, a BBQ and beer.

 

St Mary the Virgin, Melbury Bubb, Summer Luncheon: Sunday 30 July, 12.30 for 1pm at Braggs Farm, Stockwood. £10 pp (under 12s free). Home reared roast pork. Cash bar. Tickets in advance only: please contact Anna Kinnaird (01935 872297) or Joe Meier (07970 870227). In aid of church funds.


St Andrew's church, Leigh, coffee morning on Tuesday 1st August, 10.30 – midday.Do come and join us for delicious cakes and friendly chat!

 

70th Chetnole Fete and Flower Show:  

 

Saturday 5 August, 2 – 4.30 pm at the field next to the Village Hall. Traditional flower/produce marquee, plus stalls and many sideshows. Children’s fancy dress competition at 2.30, plus children’s races, and a Fun Dog show at 3.30 with 6 classes. Live music including the Chetnole Community Choir.

Cream teas in the village hall, a Pimms stall, ice creams and the chippy van. 

Entry: £1 for adults, children free

 

Beer Hackett Church Wine and Cheese Party, Friday 11 August, 6.30 - 8.30pm at Church Farm, Beer Hackett. Kindly hosted by Alastair and Cecilia Goodlad, tickets are £5 at the door, to include a finger buffet and glass of wine. There will be a raffle (donations welcome!) and all proceeds go to St Michael's church. 

 

Caundle Marsh Family BBQ: Saturday 12 August, 6-9 pm. At Westhayes Farm, Caundle Marsh, DT9 5JT. Adults: £10, children: £5, under 5s: free, including food and a drink. Poetry evening with the Rev. Dr Malcolm Guite: Tuesday 11 July, 7.30pm Yetminster Methodist Chapel. Come and hear the superbly entertaining and accessible Malcolm Guite, noted poet and priest and chaplain of Girton College, Cambridge, talk about Seamus Heaney, George Herbert, and how poems can inject vitality and wonder into the religious life. Free entry (no need to book), with drinks and a book sale afterwards.
